Terms of Service.

The rules for using Murmur. Short, plain English, no hidden footnotes.

Last updated: May 2026

1. The licence

What you're buying.

Murmur is sold as a perpetual, non-transferable licence for personal use on your own Mac. One purchase covers the version you bought and all minor updates within that major version. The $29 price is one-time. There is no auto-renewal, no recurring charge, and no expiry date on what you've already paid for.

Quick mode is free to use without purchase. AI mode and Silent mode require a paid licence.

2. Refunds

14 days, no questions asked.

If Murmur doesn't work for you for any reason, email hello@murmur.app within 14 days of purchase and you'll get a full refund. We don't ask why. We don't gate it on "have you tried X." If you regret the purchase, we want you to be able to walk away.

Beyond 14 days, refunds are at our discretion but we'd rather refund a frustrated customer than keep their $29. Just ask.

3. Your API key

Claude API spending is your responsibility.

AI mode and Silent mode call the Claude API using a key you supply. That key is yours; the spend is yours. Murmur never sees your key on a server (it lives in your macOS Keychain) and never sees the requests in transit (they go directly from your Mac to api.anthropic.com).

You're responsible for setting spend limits in your Claude API dashboard if you're worried about cost. Typical Murmur usage runs around $1-3 per month on Sonnet. We can't refund Claude API charges, only Murmur ones.

4. What Murmur sends where

Audio stays. Polished text travels.

Audio is transcribed on-device by Whisper. The audio buffer is held in RAM and discarded after transcription. It never reaches our servers (we don't have any) or Claude's.

In AI mode and Silent mode, the transcribed text plus optional screen-context information is sent to Claude. That's the only outbound network call Murmur makes during normal use. Update checks hit GitHub Releases. That's the full surface area.

5. Acceptable use

Don't be a problem for someone else.

Don't use Murmur to record people without their consent where local law requires it. Don't use it to dictate threats, harassment, or anything a court would call illegal. Don't redistribute the binary, don't reverse-engineer it for resale, don't share licence keys.

If you violate these in a way that creates a problem for us or for Claude, we may revoke your licence. We won't be petty about it.

6. Warranty and liability

The lawyer-required bit.

Murmur is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Murmur team is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use of the software. Liability for any direct claim is capped at the amount you paid for your licence (so, at most, $29).

This doesn't override any non-waivable consumer rights you have under UK or your local consumer-protection law.

7. Changes

If these terms change.

If we update this page in a way that affects your existing licence, we'll email customers and post a note on the changelog. The version of Murmur you bought continues to operate under the terms in force when you bought it. New terms apply only to new purchases.

8. Governing law

Scotland.

These terms are governed by the laws of Scotland. Disputes go through Scottish courts. If you bought Murmur as a consumer in another country, your local consumer-protection law also applies and overrides any conflict here.
